Pursue Your Passions - The Flexibility of a Freelancing Career

Pursuing a passion is an appealing career goal, especially for those who are unhappy in their current position. However, it's important to consider whether a career founded on passion is truly the right option for you. Not every passion will make for a viable career, and pursuing too many interests can actually hurt your chances of success. It's essential to understand the full range of factors that go into making a career successful before taking the leap.

Often, your passions will intersect with your personal interests and hobbies. For example, if you love to paint, you might also enjoy attending art classes or playing video games. Using this knowledge, you can discover threads that connect these passions to potential careers.

This process may take some time, but it's important to find the best possible career path for you. This involves assessing your skills and strengths and deciphering the analytical side of your passions -- the business side that can make money for you. You'll also need to assess the viability of your new passions, weighing in the education, training, and time commitment required.

For instance, if you're passionate about painting, it might be difficult to become a professional artist unless you're already an accomplished art student or have gone through some other form of formal training. Similarly, becoming a doctor can take several years of schooling and can be expensive, even after paying off the debt you incur during that time.

It's essential to determine if your passion can actually sustain a living and if you can manage the ebbs and flows of freelance work. Freelancers must continually secure new clients and this can lead to periods of heavier workloads followed by a decline in business activity for a few months or longer. You should build up a savings account that can sustain you through these fluctuations.
If you're planning on going all-in with your career, you should also plan for failure. Having six months of reserves can help cushion the blow in case your career doesn't work out or unexpected events come your way.

In the end, if you're lucky enough to have a passion that can support a career, it's a great idea to follow it. But it's essential to understand the steps that need to be taken before taking the plunge, and to be prepared for the reality that not all passions can succeed in a career.
